Smartphones, SmartApps and Smart Houses

They say a phone is only as good as its apps. Fortunately, there are some great smartphones and some even smarter apps out there. In the home arena the smartphone is really making a dent as app developers have been working on new ways to utlise the power of your smartphone.

The rise of smart appliances and services in the home means that it’s becoming easier to use your phone to control your home, even when you’re out and about.

Heating
Smart thermostats allow you to control the temperature in your home from anywhere in the world. The system uses a mix of Wi-Fi and smart technology to allow you to control your house’s temperature from your phone. And it gets better. Many of the thermostats learn how to schedule heating and program themselves once they see patterns in usage – amazing.

Security
Do you fear for your home’s security when you’re away? Why not use your phone with a motion surveillance system to monitor for intruders? There are a number of high end camera systems out there that wait for motion to be detected before turning on and beaming their view to your phone no matter where you are. All the settings can be adjusted via your smartphone anywhere in the world, giving you peace of mind in your pocket.

Lighting
The new smart light bulb looks set to change the way we light our homes thanks to its smartphone compatible technology. These new lights can be switched on, switched off and even dimmed and brightened via a smartphone and app. One of the big benefits is that you don’t have to retrofit the switches or fittings, all you need to do is to use these new smart bulbs.

Smart Key
The smart key locking technology allows you to lock and unlock your door with your phone. Its other great benefit is that it allows you to see which doors are open and which are locked via the app – something many people will appreciate. In fact, you can even make temporary smart keys for others when you’re not around and send them to their phones to allow them entry into your home. It also means not having to carry a clunky set of keys around.

Remote Starts
From coffee machines to cars, remote starting is the way of the future. Currently, a number of coffee machines allow you to control the coffee you make via an app. This means you can set your coffee to brew via your smartphone before you get in the shower in the morning, saving you a trek downstairs first.
Remote start has also become a big word in the auto world. New technology allows users to turn on their car and heater from the house – ideal for those mornings when it’s -10c outside.

With app developers focusing on apps that make our lives easier and more portable we can expect to control more everyday tasks via our smartphones.
